For the first time, Rebecca Goldberg - artist and field recordist- performed a version of the project "Presence in Distance" live at Imbue in Detroit.

Goldberg presented an original set of field recordings from around Detroit taken from her Detroit Frequency soundwalk series. She played the recordings in a sequence, chosen using chance operations, for a live audience in the Presence in Distance panned audio format.

Chance operations may seem a haphazard process, but these are structures, a series of strict rules that remove choice from the artist. For Presence in Distance, this applies to the order and side (L or R) that the field recordings are played. Each recording was numbered and drawn from a shuffled deck of cards.

Choice is what many artists most value.
